Everyone has asked the question, “What do I really want in life?” Some chase money. Others chase relationships, success, or recognition. For me, it was baseball. I gave years of my life to the game, hoping to play at the highest level. I believed it was God’s will for me, but in truth, I made it an idol.

Many people do the same thing with their own dreams. A career, a relationship, or a personal goal may look like the answer. Yet chasing those things often leaves us empty. The real question is not “What do I want?” but “What does God want for me?” When we start there, the path becomes clearer.

The Problem with Chasing Our Own Desires

Chasing our own desires can take over our lives. For many, it starts with good intentions. A dream to succeed in sports, business, or relationships feels harmless. But when it becomes the center of our lives, it turns into an idol.

Athletes often push their bodies to the limit. They risk health, family, and even faith just to reach a goal. Careers can do the same. Long hours at the office may win a promotion but cost time with loved ones. Relationships can be idolized too, as some seek perfect love to fill a deeper need.

The pattern is the same. We chase what we think will bring happiness, only to feel drained or let down. Burnout, emptiness, and regret often follow. When we build life around our wants, we find it is never enough.

Shifting the Question: From “What Do I Want?” to “What Does God Want?”

Asking “What do I want?” puts the focus on us. That question often leads to chasing goals that never satisfy. The better question is, “What does God want for my life?”

This change in perspective brings peace. God’s plans are steady, even when they do not match our dreams. His will may lead to paths that are not glamorous or popular. But they carry lasting meaning.

Take a person who once chased a dream job. They thought success and money would bring happiness. Instead, they found true joy in serving others through their church and community. What looked smaller on the outside brought greater fulfillment on the inside.

Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV) says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

How to Seek God’s Will in Practical Ways

God’s will can feel unclear, but there are simple ways to seek it.

  • Prayer and Quiet Reflection. Prayer is more than talking. It is also learning to listen. Quiet moments with God help us hear his direction.
  • Reading Scripture. The Bible reveals God’s heart and values. Reading it shapes how we see life and choices.
  • Wise Counsel. Trusted voices like mentors, coaches, or friends provide guidance. They can confirm what God is already showing us.
  • Obedience in the Small Things. Being faithful daily matters. God often uses small acts to prepare us for bigger steps.

Sports teams show the same truth. A player may not see the whole game plan, yet he trusts the coach. He follows the playbook even when the purpose is unclear.

The same applies in life. A worker may choose honesty at the cost of a promotion. While it seems like a loss, it honors God and builds long-term trust.

God’s will is not always revealed at once. But prayer, Scripture, counsel, and faithfulness make his path easier to see.

The Freedom of Surrender and Trusting God’s Timing

Surrendering our plans to God does not mean we lose. It means we gain real purpose. Our dreams may be good, but God’s plans are better. His timing shapes us and prepares us for more than we imagine.

Sports give a clear picture. A selfish player may score points but hurt the team. Another player trusts the coach, plays within the system, and helps the team win. The first seeks his own glory. The second finds purpose in serving the team.

Life works the same way. When we hold tightly to our plans, we often face frustration. When we give them to God, he works them out in ways we could not see before.

Patience is also key. Players do not master the game overnight. It takes years of training, setbacks, and growth. In the same way, God’s plans unfold over time. Delays and struggles are not wasted. They often prepare us for what comes next.

Many people later see how pain shaped them. A failed job or broken dream opened the door to a calling they never expected.

Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV) says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

When we surrender to God and trust his timing, we find peace and lasting direction.

Encouragement for Those Still Unsure

It’s normal to feel lost at times. Many people wonder if they’ve missed their path. But God isn’t hiding his plan. He shows it at the right time, often in ways we don’t expect.

Instead of stressing about the big picture, focus on faithfulness today. Read scripture, pray, love people well, and keep walking forward. Small steps build strong faith.

Remember, your worth isn’t tied to career, sport, or achievement. God values you because you are his child. That truth doesn’t change with wins or losses.

Keep trusting. Even if the road feels unclear, God is at work. His timing is perfect, and his plan is good.

Trusting God With the Path Ahead

Life isn’t about chasing what we want. It’s about trusting what God wants. His plan holds more meaning than our own ideas.

I once thought baseball was my life’s purpose. It felt like everything I worked toward. But God used that season to shape me and point me somewhere new. What I thought was the finish line became a stepping stone.

You don’t need to have it all figured out today. Take one small step. Pray. Read scripture. Reflect. Or seek wise counsel from someone you trust.

When we surrender the pressure of having all the answers, peace comes. God makes the path clear at the right time. Hope grows when we rest in his guidance.
