Financial stress can feel overwhelming. When unexpected expenses pile up, it’s easy to feel like life is spiraling out of control. But through these moments, I’ve learned the power of surrender—letting go of my anxiety and trusting that God is in control.
Jesus teaches us in Matthew 6:25-34 not to worry about our needs because our Heavenly Father knows what we need before we even ask. He takes care of the birds of the air and clothes the flowers of the field—how much more will He provide for us?
Surrendering my finances to God didn’t mean money suddenly appeared in my bank account or that the expenses vanished. What changed was my perspective. Instead of seeing financial struggles as a sign that my world was spinning out of control, I began to see them as an opportunity to deepen my trust in God.

When Everything Comes at Once
I consider myself a saver. I don’t like spending money on unnecessary things, and I do my best to budget wisely. But even the best financial planning can’t prevent unexpected expenses from hitting all at once. It always seems like when one thing goes wrong, everything else follows.
Last year was one of those seasons for me. My fiancée and I had been carefully planning our wedding, setting a realistic budget, and making sure we weren’t overspending. On top of that, we were also in the middle of a home renovation—something we had budgeted for and felt prepared to handle.
Then, out of nowhere, my car died. It wasn’t just a minor repair—it was a complete loss. Suddenly, I was faced with an expense that wasn’t in the plan, and it felt like everything was spiraling out of control. I remember sitting there, staring at the numbers, feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. We had done everything right—saved, budgeted, and planned carefully—but here we were, faced with a situation we didn’t expect and couldn’t avoid.
The Moment of Surrender
This was the moment when I had to make a decision. I could let the stress consume me, or I could turn to God and trust Him to make a way. If I’m being honest, my initial reaction wasn’t immediate surrender. My first instinct was to try to figure out how I could control the situation. Could I push back the wedding budget? Could I delay certain home renovations? Could I take on extra work to cover the cost?
But the more I tried to control it, the more stressed I became. I felt like I was drowning in financial pressure. It was then that I realized I had to let go. I prayed, telling God exactly how I felt—frustrated, anxious, and unsure of how to move forward. And in that moment, peace came over me. Not because my financial situation had changed, but because I was reminded that I didn’t have to handle this on my own.
Financial Trials as a Faith-Building Opportunity
When everything feels like it’s falling apart financially, our response can either drive us into deeper anxiety or draw us closer to God. It’s easy to rely on our own ability to save, budget, and control our money, but trials like these remind us that our security doesn’t come from our bank accounts—it comes from our faith in Christ.
Here are a few things I learned during this season of financial stress:
- God’s Timing is Always Perfect – Even when things feel inconvenient to us, God is never caught off guard. He knew my car would break down before I did, and He had already made a way for us to handle it.
- Faith Requires Action – Trusting God doesn’t mean ignoring financial wisdom. It means making responsible decisions while relying on Him for provision and guidance.
- Peace Comes from Trusting, Not Controlling – The more I tried to control my circumstances, the more anxious I became. The moment I chose to let go and trust God, I experienced peace that didn’t make logical sense.
- God Provides in Unexpected Ways – While I didn’t suddenly receive a financial windfall, God provided through small, unexpected blessings—whether it was a refund check in the mail, an extra side job, or even just the generosity of a friend.
Encouragement for Others Facing Financial Stress
If you’re in a season where financial burdens are weighing you down, know that you are not alone. Everyone faces financial stress at some point, but the difference lies in how we handle it. While the world tells us to hustle harder, panic, or fall into despair, God invites us to trust Him.
Here are some steps that helped me find peace in the midst of financial stress, and I hope they help you too:
- Pray First – Before you make any financial decisions, bring your worries to God. Lay everything before Him, and ask for His guidance.
- Seek Wise Counsel – The Bible encourages us to seek wisdom. Talk to financially wise people in your life who can provide godly advice.
- Trust That God Will Provide – It may not always be in the way we expect, but God will always provide what we need.
- Take It One Step at a Time – Financial stress can feel overwhelming when we look at everything at once. Focus on taking small, faith-filled steps forward.
- Remember That Your Worth Isn’t in Your Wealth – The world measures success by money and possessions, but God sees our hearts. Your value isn’t determined by your financial situation.
Finances will always be a part of life, and unexpected expenses will continue to arise. But the next time you face a financial trial, I hope you’ll remember that there is a choice—you can try to handle it all on your own, or you can surrender it to the One who holds all things in His hands.
I know which one brought me peace, and I pray you find that same peace too.
